All-On-4 Procedure Timeline

The procedure typically takes 4-6 hours, depending on whether you’re having a single arch (upper or lower) treated or both arches (full mouth). When you leave our office, your temporary bridge(s) will be securely attached to your new implants. You will wear these temporary bridges for about 4 months, giving your implants time to integrate with your bone while your gums and jaws heal into a stable, long-term position. This healing period ensures the best possible fit for your final bridges.

After this healing time, we will begin crafting your final bridges, which will take a few appointments over a 5-6 week period. During these visits, you’ll collaborate with us to design the perfect smile for your permanent teeth.

Mouth Impressions

The lab uses these materials to create your temporary implant bridge(s). If you're missing all or most of the teeth in the arch being treated, your doctor may recommend a wax try-in. This is a mock-up of your temporary implant bridge, which will be used to assess the bite position, aesthetics, and other factors to ensure the best fit and appearance.

Procedure

The procedure involves removing any remaining teeth (if necessary), placing the implants, and installing temporary implant bridge(s). The entire process typically takes between 4-7 hours.

Post Op #1

Day After the Procedure: We'll check your healing progress and address any questions or concerns you may have.

3 Weeks After the Procedure: We will remove sutures, check your healing progress, and typically clear you to begin using a water flosser/WaterPik at this appointment.

Impressions for Final Teeth

4 Months After the Procedure: We'll assess the integration of your implants with the jawbone, ensure proper healing, and begin planning for your permanent teeth.

Try In

5-10 Days After Impressions: We will try in a mock-up of your final teeth. In some cases, multiple wax try-ins may be required to ensure the perfect fit and appearance. It's important that you are completely satisfied with the wax try-ins before we proceed, as once they are processed, no changes can be made. If you decide to make any changes to your bridge(s) after approval and fabrication, a full-cost remake charge will apply.

Once you approve your wax try-in(s), it usually takes 4-6 weeks for your bridge or bridges to be ready for placement.

Yes! While your implants and teeth are securely placed from day one, we recommend maintaining a soft diet during the 4-month healing period. What does this mean? A good general rule is to eat anything you can cut with a plastic fork. This approach ensures the best integration of your implants into the bone, helping to secure long-term success. Since you're investing in a solution that could last you many decades-or even a lifetime-taking care during the healing period will help achieve the best possible outcome.

Maintaining the health of your All-On-4 teeth and implants is simple but requires consistent care. Just like with natural teeth, regular brushing and flossing are essential. Spend a few minutes each day to keep your mouth and implants healthy. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to clean your bridges and a water flosser, such as the popular WaterPik, to clean underneath them multiple times a day.

To minimize the risk of complications, it's best to avoid smoking. Diabetics should also exercise caution, as they are at a higher risk of complications. Managing your diabetes is key to the long-term success of your implants.

Additionally, make sure to visit your dentist regularly for evaluations of your new implant teeth to ensure they remain in optimal condition throughout the year.

While experiences may vary, you can expect some discomfort and possibly swelling after your procedure. Many patients report very little discomfort during their post-op appointment the following day. You will be prescribed pain medication to help manage any discomfort. Additionally, if you're a candidate, the doctor may administer a steroid shot to help reduce discomfort and swelling during the first few days.

We do not currently offer general anesthesia, but we do provide oral conscious sedation to help you relax during your procedure. This medication often makes it so you may not even remember the procedure. A prescription will be provided, and you can pick it up at your pharmacy of choice.

Important: You must have a driver with you for the procedure — someone who can drive you after you take the oral sedation pill(s). You must not operate a motor vehicle or any machinery after taking the medication.

Significant bleeding will have stopped before you leave the clinic, but it's normal to experience some slight bleeding (oozing) for 1-3 days after the procedure. Additionally, you may notice increased salivation when your temporary teeth are first placed. When this extra saliva mixes with a small amount of blood, it can appear as though there's more bleeding than there actually is. If heavy bleeding persists, please contact the office immediately.

If you opt for acrylic denture teeth with a titanium bar, be prepared for staining around your teeth and the need for replacement every 5-10 years. Additionally, make sure you're fully informed about the costs involved in the procedure, including surgery, temporary teeth, and final restoration. Some offices may charge an initial surgery/temporary fee, only for you to later discover additional fees for your final teeth.

If a dental implant fails to integrate, we will replace it at no cost. We also provide a 5-year warranty on the final bridge. To maintain this warranty, patients must return every 6 months for maintenance and hygiene of their bridges and implants. The surgery typically takes about 1 hour per arch, followed by approximately 2 hours for the lab portion of creating the teeth. If we begin in the morning, patients receiving a single upper or lower arch are usually finished by lunchtime. For those replacing both top and bottom teeth, the procedure typically wraps up between 2:30 and 3:30 in the afternoon. Much of this time is spent waiting for the teeth to be crafted in our in-house lab and trying them in to ensure your smile is perfect. While it’s a long day, the results will certainly be worth it!
